PageLines Platform Pro — Why?
WordPress is great blogging platform but I can never get it to do what I want ‘out-of-the-box’. It always seems to take a lot of customization, plugins and widgets to get it right — I don’t have the time. This is the benefit of using PageLines Platform Pro framework. A large proportion of the work is done for me, all I need to do is add a few plugins and it’s ready to go.
Blogging for me is about writing, not presentation, design or development. If I wanted to do those things I’d stick with CSS, HTML, JavaScript or jQuery. If I needed more functionality than a read-only HTML site can deliver I’d switch to PHP. If I’m going to build a complex site with hundreds, or thousands, of users I’d switch it up again to Kohana.
I looked at a few of the large WordPress frameworks such as Thesis and Genesis but I settled on Platform Pro in the end. I wanted a framework with a clean, professional, typographically-focussed theme and something that I could put on multiple domains as cost-effectively as possible. All of these frameworks seemed to be much-of-a-muchness. Googling around some blog reviews didn’t sway me one way or another so it largely came down to what the basic theme looked like and how much tweaking I’d have to do to get a new site up and running.
Platform Pro is licensed to me, not by domain. It’s also based on a design style I personally like, which reminds me of the NY and LA Times sites, a strong serif font on a clean white page.
My only problem is that it’s such a complex beast that it could take me months to get used to it, especially as I venture from the safety of blog posts into more of the CMS functionality.
